Interestingly, if every one of the Trump voters donated around $5 that would pay off this judgment. The real question is whether it will be vacated or reduced on appeal. There is no precedence for ever using this law against an entity when no damages occurred and even less with respect to the award so there's a good chance it will at least be reduced on appeal if not vacated altogether. And yes, it can go to SCOTUS although with John Roberts as the Chief Justice it would not surprise me if they won't take it on appeal. Oh, another interesting factoid. Trump will likely be able to write off whatever the final judgment is from his state of Federal taxes. So you will be paying part of this judgment.....assuming you pay taxes that is.
So who are the losers in this case besides Trump himself? First is the state of NY. This will have a chilling effect on real estate developers and really any corporation that does business in the state. When I had my business there were a number of states I avoided having operations in and NY was one of them. Second are the banks. If the ruling stands he can't get loans from any banks chartered in NY so they will lose his business, not to mention the impact it will likely have on real estate lending state wide. Third is Democrat politicians, especially ones that come from a business background. They have once again set a precedent that they will regret when GOP DA's start to bring charges against their companies.
I know you hate Trump and that for folks like you the end justifies the means. But this case, which I believe will ultimately be overturned or significantly altered, was not the way to go after him. Vote against him by all means. But opening political opponents to lawfare is the thing of third world and despotic countries, not this one. Remember, he who laughs last, laughs best.
