Anyone ever hear about this? I saw a clip on CNBC a few months ago. Apparently the CEO/ inventor is not a flake and has a long telcom history.

Interesting. Have you tried it? Or, know anyone that has?

Here's what I know:

"The MagicJack sells for between $29.95-$39.95, and then there's an annual license fee of $19.95 for unlimited calls in the U.S., Canada and portions of Europe."

So, saying "never pay for phone calls again" is a little misleading, since you're paying $19.95 per year. Still, a good deal.

Or is it? After all, how many times have you heard of someone having to pay for LOCAL calls in the first place? And how do you RECEIVE phone calls? To do that, you need a phone number, and to be assigned a phone number, you must pay for phone service.

There is a lot more research that needs to be done before I can say whether or not this is a good deal. My initial reaction is this: it might be a good deal for someone who makes a lot of expensive long distance calls, and someone who travels a lot would probably get the most benefit. But for your average phone user, it's probably not the sweet deal they make it out to be.

For your average cell phone user, it could be a good thing, too... but most cell phone companies offer plans that probably compare favorably with $39.95 plus $19.95 per month.

I ordered one. The $39.95 includes the first year's service. That's better than the $50/ month phone bill if it works. Thats $600/ yr vs $19.95/ yr?? Heck I could fill up my boat for the difference :-)

But aren't you still going to have to pay something to somebody (Ma Bell or your cell service) in order to be able to have people call you?

Let us know how things eventually shake out; I'm interested in how much this thing really saves you in the long run. (As far as I know, it might be a GREAT deal; or, it might be a scam. I have no idea; that's why I'm curious.)

I guess so but the problem I have is my cell is not good and I don't want to pay Ma Bell for all the Long distance. I'll keep you posted.

Looks to me like it is designed to handle all your chargeable outgoing calls--L.D. or zoned locals. If you currently use unlimited LD calls from AT&T (or others) you're paying about $20-24/month. That charge is replaced by $20/year. Problems: Still got to have incoming land line to receive calls: $30+/mo. Computer audio masks your voice somewhat which is annoying to call recipient.
