IMO, if we still had the BCS ratings and selection then FSU would have played Alabama for the championship. FSU because of undefeated season and Alabama as "best one loss" SeC champ. Wow, how wrong that would have been! The Ducks and the Bucks took care of both of them.
I think Va Tech and Arizona should play a consolation game on Sunday night.

Your post has been sitting here like an island unto itself..maybe because when you start thinking about the possibilities the answer becomes YES ...the BCS was flawed...YES the system prior to the BCS consisting of opinions of journalists and coaches was flawed..and YES the current system is flawed as much as any of the others. I am still bothered by the arbitrary removing of TCU from the 3rd rank when all they had done to deserve removal was to show even more improvement and strength. We hear so much about how good and right NCAA basketball has managed the task of crowning a champ but YES it is also very flawed because ultimately it is humans with their many built-in biases who determine the field and most importantly where and who they will be playing. Do the best two teams in the NCAA tournament necessarily get a chance to play each other...you could argue that either way. Until human and team performances can be completely and accurately translated into mathematical quantities, one system is almost as good as the other. It's the dadgummed humans that screw things up...my story and sticking to it....

The best we can do is have a playoff system with the teams deemed to be best in a ranking system. I think the system they used this year is the closest we've seen to getting it right, but yes, it also has it's flaws. Florida State was the weakest team in the hunt, but they played because of their record. There are too many teams for everyone to play and there is no way to assess motivation and teamwork with math, so there will always be a human factor....in Basketball, the field is large enough so the best team is assured a chance. As for football, I agree that TCU got hosed. I think the best team in the country was in the top 6 this year and I also believe the Buckeys were on a destiny mission, but TCU deserved a chance. There needs to be at least 8 teams in the palyoff system and I'd rather see 16.....it would be easy to do if the conference championship week was instead incorporated into the playoff system.

This is a more reasonable response to LNG's post than the one I made out of frustration at how the season ended. I would love an expanded playoff system but have a lot of concern for the toll it might take on the players. A system like you mentioned that would not tack on even more games could be a reasonable approach. The college game has gotten so rough..so intense. These players are trying to kill each other out there (AU defense excluded)...but it would have been fun to have seen Baylor and TCU thrown into the mix this year.
