I have a pretty nice gas grill in the outdoor kitchen area at my house. I want to add another grill for bbq and smoking. Is a Big Green Egg the way to go or is there something else to consider? Thanks.

I have 2 of them, a large and an Xlarge....haven't seen anything yet that I'd prefer over the egg.

Got to agree with McGill. I have 4 grills at the lake - egg, gas, Weber kettle and offset smoker. Egg is best all around. Use the gas for veggie packs, the Weber for overflow and the offset when I feel like it.

Thanks. Should I get an XL even if I may rarely need the extra space? I would hate to buy a large, then wish it were bigger from time to time. Is an XL harder to use for a small meal?

Both work fine for a small meal, but the XL will use a little more coal....if I had to have just one, it would definitely be the XL.

One more question: Are most Egg dealers firm on their pricing, or is there room for a little dealing?

Many have delivery and setup factored into their price. I got $150 knocked off my XL by taking it home and putting it together myself.....it can never hurt to ask.

is a bunch of questions you have to answer for yourself before you jump. 1. Why isn't your gas grill sufficient? Why are you lookin'? 2. How much work?? Gas and electric are easier, some with very good results. Charcoal is harder and messy, but with arguably better results. 3. What do you want to cook on a regular basis? And for how many people? Cook for 45 minutes and serve or all night long with multiple "pork shoulders", ribs and brisket for 25 hungry people?? Man, oh man, grill choice is difficult. Most of us who cook outdoors have gone from gas, to electric, to charcoal, back to gas, back to charcoal<<<< etc, and wasted a bunch of grills in the process, trying to find the right setup for ""ME"". Good luck. It ain't easy to get it right for you.

I have a Weber gas grill that has sat totally unused for 15 years. I only use charcoal and I can have the egg ready as fast or faster than I could get the gas grill properly heated. Gas is not even a consideration for me.

many of us have unused grills sitting around collecting rust. Finally settling on the right grill/smoker/combo is a process of experience, knowing what you normally cook, how you cook it, how much effort is required, and what you expect the results to be. And, yes, at what cost? Every GrillMaster's choice. Maybe a Right of Passage? The experience is worth the journey.
