It's mine. :-) The secret is about a tablespoon of bacon fat in the frying oil. Gives a bit of good flavor and a nice golden color. Of course, it has to be marinated in buttermilk before cooking. And a good seasoning mix in the flour. I know a lot of people like to use stuff like corn flakes or panko crumbs, but I'm old school on fried chicken.
If I have to eat it out, Jim Bob's in Alex City and Auburn does a pretty good chicken finger. Momma Ella's used to be good too.

Grandma, yep, because they grew both the chickens in the coop and the lard from their hogs. You bet. Crisco for Momma.

You really can't beat lard for flavor. I think adding the bit of bacon fat is along the same idea.
It's never been clear to me why solid Crisco is superior to regular oil in frying, but it seems to be. But the thought of that white stuff solidifying in my arteries made me give it up.

The best home fried I ever had (ahem... besides my mother's) was a lady that saved up her bacon grease and fried it in that. Man! was that good! I thought you just used it for cornbread....
Now restaurant wise I think the best right now is Bucks. He brines his overnight. Never dry, perfectly crispy and not greasy.

Everybody calls it Bucks but its really the Buck's Dairy Quick in A-Town. The name Buck is not on the sign. Next to a plant nursery (Betty's?). It's on 22 right as you are going away from town. Big hangout in the 60's I think. The ambiance is overwhelming. If you haven't been, go. Buckburger is really good too. You wouldn't believe how much take-out chicken goes out of there. Cheap too.
