These planes are awesome. While I have seen them before flying over Lake Martin, recently they are flying really close to the water. Guessing they are doing some maneuvering flights?

Training flights. I often hear them come over my house.

I have seen a number of C-130's, both US and other countries equipment, flying the same routes by our house, of late.
My guess is that one of the units was having an exercise or a competition of sorts.
Fun to watch!

Lake Martin has a Military Traing Route (MTR) that goes directly over the dam and continues just east past River North then up over Lake Wedowee. You can look these up on a Sectional Chart. These routes are depicted by a faded greyish line and will start with the letters VR (Visual Flight Rules) or IR (Instrument Flight Rules) The one that goes the length of Lake Martin is VR 1056 to the North East and VR 1052 to the South West. It has four numbers which means it's designated for flight below 1500 feet AGL.
