O.K. Now that mildew is off the seats and protected. What is the best way to clean the bottom of a fiberglass boat. I got thge scum off by power washing, but there is a dark stain left behind. It comes off with comit and a scrubbie pad but I think the gel coat is too. thanks
Hydroflouric Acid (alumabrite), the same stuff used on pontoons will clean the stains off easily. I've used it for years with good results and no fiberglass or gel coat damage. Dilute to about 10 parts water to 1 part acid, apply with a mop let stand a couple of minutes and rinse well. Car Quest in Dadeville carries the acid (theirs is weaker). Do not let the mix get on glass or painted areas. It will etch glass on contact--not a good thing. Start with weak solution and strengthen for results. Usually two applications are needed. May pose a problem for a painted trailer.
Most people think I'm crazy when I mention this, but coastal areas use it all the time. Stains are really bad in salt and brackish waters
Glissen Hull Magic made by the same people who make Bengal roach spray. I park my boat in the water for extended amounts of time (Logan Martin) amd end up with a pretty bad scum line by the end of summer. Hull Magic removes it without any scrubbing. Go to bengal.com marine products.
Any hull cleaner will work OK. I used Starbrite hull cleaner in the past. It is essentially acid diluuted in water. Make sure you wear rubber gloves when using it because it does sting if you get it on your hands.
Not to hijack this post, but is there a way to clean the pontoons of a pontoon boat (any tricks or tools) while it is in the water? I think I know the answer; just asking trying to avoid taking it back out of water. Have lots of (elbow grease) and time available. LOL
Be careful of using acid based cleaners with residues that end up in the lake. Frog kissers and most fishermen understand how this affects the shoreline habitat that we all treasure.
Thanks. I used a combination of on/off and scrub pad. boat bottom is clean. That on/off stuff is a strong acid it cleans great but will burn a hole in a concrete floor if it drips.
