Subject:   2007 waverunner vx110 - low rpm mode or damaged?
Date:   9/17/2012 7:16:38 PM

a couple weeks ago my 07 waverunner took on water and the engine area was 2/3 full of water before discovered. After pumping it out and leaving it until I could give it a try about a week later it turned over and started fine. So I took it out to try to run it and see what, if anything, might be wrong with it.

Pretty quickly I realized it wouldn't get above 10 mph.

My first thought is that something kicked the low rpm mode in automatically.

I bought the ski used and have never had it in low mode. After the purchase I asked the seller (dealer) if they had a remote for it as the manual explained the use. He sent me one.

Q- does the remote need to be programmed at a dealership to the specific ski?

I took the remote out to the ski this past weekend but nothing seemed to happen, no noise, no flashing lights, nothing.

Could the ski have kicked into Low RPM mode automatically when the engine compartment was flooded or am I looking at something damaged?

steve

Thanks in advance,

Most PWC keys must be programmed, unless they are of the kill switch type.  We have the software for Yamaha and will gladly plug up your machine and advise you of what we see.  I am at the Lake Martin office if you want to call me today.  256-825-3388.  Are there any beeps or lights when it slows?

Lights should flash and the bike should beep when you lock/unlock it. There should be an "L-Mode" light in the dash to indicate "Low Speed Mode", but that limits the speed to about 35 mph (on 2010 FX), sounds like you have a problem - maybe oil pressure related or electronics...

I agree with the others that it is not L mode and must be something else. Have you checked the oil to see if it is milky in consistency? That is a sure sign water got into the engine and needs to be removed. Also, if you have an oil pump stick it in the bottom of the crankcase and see if you pull out water or just oil. Alternatively you could do what I would do and take it to Cat so he can check it out.

wish I could take it to the highly recommended Cat.  I'm not in that area but I am appreciative of the advice and feedback to my questions.

I am headed back to Prattville in a while.  I go 50 to 229 then 63 south.  If you are over that way, I'll stop by if you want.  Or, if you got a minute to call me I'll tell you a couple things to check right quick.  There are just a couple of questions I need to ask before I tell you what to look for.

thanks, I appreciate the effort, truly do.  I am not near the ski until Sunday and I'm in Atlanta area so thanks again for advice.  I may take you up on the call.
